Coaching and the 70-20-10 Learning Model

I was working with an L&D leader when we started discussing the role of leadership coaching within the 70-20-10 learning model.

As a quick review, the 70-20-10 learning model states that 70% of what we learn comes from the experience of doing. 20% comes from informal learning from others, like our managers and coworkers. The final 10% comes from formalized learning courses.

So where does leadership coaching fit?

Leadership coaching can play a pivotal role in the 70-20-10 learning model by providing individuals with personalized guidance and support as they develop their leadership skills and knowledge through experience. (Combo of the 70 and 20)

The coaching process can provide a structured and supportive environment for individuals to reflect on their experiences, identify areas for improvement, and develop action plans for further learning and development. (Combo of the 20 and 10)

Additionally, coaching can provide your leaders with the necessary support and guidance to effectively learn from the feedback provided by others. (Combo of the 20 and 10)

Said another way, leadership coaching supports each of the areas within the 70-20-10 learning model.

In my experience as an L&D lead, I watched how coaching accelerated the learning for leaders and the impact it had on individuals, teams, and the culture.

How do you support your learning programs?
